...The perspective of a typical novelist who manipulates the actions and psychology of characters to create a story is completely absent, and the prose depicts the trajectory of a spiritual journey in which an alienated self seeks a connection with the outside world by making full use of the power of fantasy. Carl Einstein's (1885-1940) Bebuquin (1912) is also a unique work with a complex structure and style that directly depicts the state of a split self that desires solitude but cannot bear it. The evaluation of Expressionism was the subject of a continuing debate in the German exiled writer's magazine Wald in 1937-38.
