Plant growth hormone

...The term "plant regulator" is used to include these synthetic substances, as well as substances that exhibit plant hormone-like activity in small amounts but are not necessarily common in the plant kingdom. When the emphasis is on substances that affect plant growth, the synonyms "plant growth hormone" and "plant growth regulator" are used, respectively. The word hormone was first used in the world of botany in 1909, when German H. Fitting discovered that extracts of orchid pollen caused the enlargement and growth of the ovary (parthenocarpy), and he believed that the extract contained an active substance and named it hormone.
