"Kashi" (household retainer) or "Kenin" (family member). In medieval Europe, a person who belonged to the king or the religious and secular nobility and, although not a free citizen, held important family jobs or military service, and thus obtained special status and aristocratic privileges. In Germany, in the 11th century, they developed into a unique class called Dienstmann, and were subject to their own unique status laws. They were highly valued for managing territories directly controlled by feudal lords, but later became assimilated into ordinary feudal vassals and lost their distinctiveness.
