Located in the central north of Ibaraki Prefecture, the city borders Fukushima Prefecture on its northern tip. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city area was the home base of the Satake clan in the Middle Ages, and became the property of the Mito Tokugawa clan in the early modern period, developing as a distribution center for goods. It borders Hitachi City to the east. The Suigun Line and Joban Expressway run through the city. Grapes, pears, and other fruit and vegetable cultivation is thriving. It is home to Zuiryuzan, the graveyard of the Mito Tokugawa clan, and Seizan Manor, where Tokugawa Mitsukuni retired. Many people commute to both Hitachi and Mito. In December 2004, the Kuji District villages of Kanasago, Suifu, and Satomi were incorporated into the city. 茨城県中北部にあり,北端は福島県に接する市。1954年市制。中心市街は中世に佐竹氏の本拠地,近世以降は水戸徳川家の所領となり,物資集散地として発展。東は日立市に接する。水郡線,常磐自動車道が通じる。ブドウ,ナシなどの果樹・野菜栽培が盛ん。水戸藩徳川家の墓所瑞竜山,徳川光圀が隠棲(いんせい)した西山(せいざん)荘がある。日立,水戸両市への通勤者も多い。2004年12月久慈郡金砂郷町,水府村,里美村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。371.99km2。5万6250人(2010)。
