King of Spain. Reigned 1874-85. Eldest son of Isabella II. Studied mainly in England. Married his cousin Mercedes, but she died. He remarried Maria Cristina, daughter of an Austrian Archduke. He ascended to the throne through a coup led by General Martínez Campos. A moderate and liberal, he was well received by a Spanish society exhausted by civil war, and he put an end to the Carlist Wars and rebellions in colonial Cuba. A new constitution was drawn up in 1876 by a parliament led by Cánovas del Castillo.

スペイン王。在位1874‐85年。イサベル2世の長男。おもにイギリスで学び，いとこのメルセデスと結婚したが死別し，オーストリア大公の娘マリア･クリスティナと再婚。マルティネス･カンポス将軍のクーデタによって王位に就く。穏健派で自由主義者であったこの王は，内戦に疲弊したスペイン社会に好意的に迎えられ，カルリスタ戦争や植民地キューバの反乱を収拾。カノバス･デル･カスティリョが率いる議会で，1876年新憲法を制定した。
