Kegon Falls

Japanese:
Kegon Falls

This waterfall is located on the shore of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. It flows over the Daiya River and is the first of Nikko's three famous waterfalls (Kirifuri Falls and Urami Falls). Along with Lake Chuzenji, it is famous throughout Japan as a nationally designated scenic spot, and is one of the central landscapes of Nikko National Park. It is 97 meters high and about 7 meters wide. The water from Lake Chuzenji, which was formed when lava erupted from Mt. Nantai dammed the Old Daiya River, flows down as a waterfall, creating a pool about 40 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep at the bottom of the waterfall. Agglomerate and andesite have accumulated on the granite porphyry of the base to form the waterfall wall. Groundwater springs up from under the upper andesite, forming the twelve waterfalls, which flow down like blinds. There is a cavity 26 meters deep and 50 meters wide in the lower agglomerate rock near the water level of the basin, from the back of which groundwater flows. The lower part of the waterfall wall is gouged out by the gouging of the bottom of the waterfall caused by the falling water and the erosion of the agglomerate rock caused by the groundwater welling up, and then the upper part of the waterfall wall collapses, causing the waterfall to gradually retreat.

Kegon Valley downstream of the falls was formed when the falls receded towards Lake Chuzenji. The amount of water is regulated at the end of Lake Chuzenji, so the valley never normally dries up, even during the dry winter months. There is an impressive view from the observation deck below the pay elevator. There is also a good view from Akechidaira Observatory, where you can see both Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. There is a bus from Nikko that goes up the Second Irohazaka Pass and passes through two tunnels to arrive above the falls.
