...The United States Navy under Admiral J.D. Sloat also took control of the Pacific coast. The United States Army eliminated Mexican resistance on all fronts and gained military superiority. Peace talks by secret emissary NP Trist from late August to early September 1947 ended in failure, but the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1948, required Mexico to renounce its claims to Texas and cede New Mexico and California, in exchange for a payment of $15 million. As a result, Mexico lost nearly half of its land area, while the United States expanded its territory to the Pacific coast and established a foothold for expansion into the Pacific and Asia. ...
