The shortest prophetic book in the Old Testament, chapter 1, verse 21. The author and date of its writing are uncertain. However, the content is consistent in that it tells of God's judgment on the people of Edom. The people of Edom separated from Israel, and although the two were related by blood, they were constantly fighting each other. Verses 1-14 and 15b are God's announcements regarding Edom's fate and explain the reasons for its downfall. The prophet probably witnessed the collapse of Edom around 500-450 BCE. Verses 15a and 16-21 were written somewhat later and are in the form of apocalyptic literature. They tell us that God's day of judgment is approaching not only for the people of Edom but also for all the nations, and that the new Israel will conquer the entire surrounding territory on the day of Yahweh.
