1886‐1941 King of Spain. Reigned 1886-1931. Born after the death of his father, Alfonso XII, he ascended to the throne on the day of his birth, with his mother, Queen Maria Cristina, as regent. In 1898, Spain was defeated in the Spanish-American War and lost Cuba and the Philippines. In 1902, on his 16th birthday, he entered a period of direct rule, and in 1906 he married Princess Victoria Eugenia, niece of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. On the day of his wedding, he experienced an attack in the streets of Madrid.
