Year of birth: Tempo 14 (1843)
A shogunate vassal and swordsman in the late Edo period. His name was Hideaki. He was born in Okachimachi, Shita-ya, Edo, as the eldest son of Iba Gunbei, a sword instructor at the Kobusho. He excelled in martial arts and earned the nickname of Iba's Little Tengu. He entered the Kobusho, and in 1864 he became a retainer in the inner ward and accompanied Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi. With the military government reforms of 1866, he was incorporated into the newly established guerrilla forces, and fought bravely at Toba-Fushimi. After returning to Edo after being injured, he set sail to Manazuru with comrades including Hitomi Katsutaro, and attacked the rear of the new government forces and fought at Hakone. Despite losing his left arm in the fierce battle, he scattered the enemy and gained a reputation for his bravery. He then fled to Hakodate and joined the forces of Enomoto Takeaki, and in 1869 he was shot to the shoulder and abdomen and died in battle at Goryokaku. He was 27 years old. His last words were, "Wait, you are my friend, even in your lost path, but it is painful for me to leave you for a while." Incidentally, Sotaro, who assassinated Toru Hoshi, was his younger brother.
