The second king of the Trastámara dynasty of Aragon. Reigned 1416-58. He excelled in both the literary and military arts, and was nicknamed "El Magnánimo" (the Magnificent) for his conquest of the Kingdom of Naples and his court where he treated many literary scholars and artists. Alfonso, who aspired to exercise strong royal authority, was in conflict with the Aragonese parliaments, which were careful to maintain their respective laws and political traditions, from the moment he ascended to the throne. For this reason, he focused his policies on expanding his hegemony in the Mediterranean and defending his own interests. He consolidated his control over the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, which were already under the rule of the Aragonese royal family, fought against Genoa over Corsica, and in 1421 was adopted by the Queen of Naples, who had no heir, at her request.

アラゴンのトラスタマラ朝第2代の王。在位1416‐58年。文武両面に優れ，ナポリ王国の征服とここに構えた宮廷で多くの人文学者や芸術家を厚く遇したことから〈寛大王el Magnánimo〉の異名を持つ。強力な王権の行使を志向するアルフォンソは，それぞれの法や政治伝統の維持に細心なアラゴン諸国の議会とは即位時点から対立，そのためにもっぱら地中海での覇権拡大と自国権益の防衛に政策の主眼を置いた。すでにアラゴン王家の統治下にあったシチリアとサルデーニャ両島の支配を固め，コルシカをめぐってジェノバと戦い，1421年には後継者のいないナポリ女王の要請を受けてその養子となった。
