Suspension polymerization

A method of high polymerization. The monomers are vigorously stirred in an insoluble dispersion medium (usually water with an adjusted hydrogen ion concentration) to disperse them into small particles. When radical polymerization is carried out in this medium, the polymer particles that are produced have a fairly large diameter, and when stirring is stopped after polymerization is complete, they settle to the bottom of the vessel. They are easily separated and taken out by filtration or centrifugation. This is also called pearl polymerization, and beautiful polymers can be obtained. Stabilizers such as polyvinyl alcohol, gelatin, or barium sulfate are often added to stabilize the dispersion.

高重合法の一つ。単量体を不溶性の分散媒（一般に水素イオン濃度を調節した水が使われる）中に、単量体を激しく攪拌(かくはん)して小さな粒状に分散させる。その中でラジカル重合させると、生成した重合体粒子は相当に大きな径をもち、重合終了後攪拌を中止すると器底に沈殿してくる。濾過(ろか)または遠心分離で簡単に分離して取り出される。真珠重合ともいわれ美しい重合体も得られる。分散を安定させるために安定剤としてポリビニルアルコール、ゼラチンや硫酸バリウムなどを加えておくことが多い。
