A city on the Danube River in southwestern Romania, near the border with Yugoslavia. Population 118,000 (1994). Capital of Mehedinci County. Its official name is Drobeta-Turnu Severin, derived from its ancient Roman name Drobeta. The area where the Danube crosses the Western Carpathians is called the Iron Gate, and the river used to flow rapidly through a gorge. ルーマニア南西部,ユーゴスラビアとの国境近くのドナウ川沿いの都市。人口11万8000(1994)。メヘディンチ県の県庁所在地。ローマ時代の古名ドロベタDrobetaを冠し,ドロベタ・トゥルヌ・セベリンDrobeta‐Turnu Severinが正称である。ドナウ川が西カルパチ山脈を横断する地帯を〈鉄門〉といい,峡谷をつくり川は急流をなしていたが,1971年,鉄門地帯にユーゴスラビアと共同でドナウ川最大の鉄門ダムが造られ,鉄門湖が完成した。
