Spiritual color - Reisai

Japanese: 霊彩 - れいさい

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter-monk from the early Muromachi period. He stamped his works with the "Akifumi Jitsuji" mark. He is believed to have been a disciple of Yoshiyama Myocho. It is known from the inscription that he painted the "Nirvana Picture" (owned by Daizokyo-ji Temple in Yamanashi) for Jokyo-ji Temple in Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture) in 1435. It is also recorded in the Annals of the Yi Dynasty that he traveled to Korea in 1463 and presented a White-robed Kannon Picture to Sejo. Other details of his life are unknown, but there are over 10 works bearing his signature. The delicacy of the brushstrokes and the keen sense of form seen in "Han Shan Picture" (owned by the Gotoh Museum of Art), "Hokan Han Shan Shitoku Picture" (owned by Mr. Burke, Yone), and "Manjusri Picture" (owned by the Tokyo National Museum) are highly regarded as excellent works not seen in his teacher's works. <References> Watanabe Hajime, "Studies on Higashiyama Ink Paintings"

生年：生没年不詳
室町前期の画僧。作品に「脚踏実地」の印を押す。吉山明兆の弟子と推測される。永享7(1435)年に駿河(静岡県)浄居寺のために「涅槃図」(山梨大蔵経寺蔵)を描いたことがその銘文から知れる。また寛正4(1463)年に朝鮮に渡り,世祖に白衣観音図を贈ったことが『李朝実録』に記録される。その他の事跡は不明だが,落款のある作品が10点余現存する。「寒山図」(五島美術館蔵),「豊干寒山拾得図」(米・バーク氏蔵),「文殊図」(東京国立博物館蔵)などにみられる筆線の繊細さと,鋭敏な形態感覚は,師の作にはみられない優れたものとして,高く評価されている。<参考文献>渡辺一『東山水墨画の研究』
