1040‐1109 King of Leon (reigned 1065-1109) and of Castile (reigned 1072-1109). He inherited the Kingdom of Leon from his father, but was pursued by his brother, King Sancho II of Castile, and fled to Toledo, which was then an Islamic kingdom, and after his brother's death became king of both Leon and Castile. He is not well regarded in historical records due to his feud with El Cid, his brother's chief vassal, but in reality he was a man of great diplomatic ability, who continued and promoted the policy of rapprochement with Europe that had been followed by his grandfather, strengthening his defenses in the war of recovery, and strengthening his own position by responding to the wishes of the Roman Catholic Church, including the unification of the liturgy.
