King of Leon (reigned 1065-1109) and of Castile (reigned 1072-1109). He inherited the Kingdom of Leon from his father, but was pursued by his brother, King Sancho II of Castile, and fled to Toledo, which was then an Islamic kingdom, and after his brother's death became king of both Leon and Castile. He is not well regarded in historical records due to his feud with El Cid, his brother's chief vassal, but in reality he was a man of great diplomatic ability, who continued and promoted the policy of rapprochement with Europe that had been followed by his grandfather, strengthening his defenses in the war of recovery, and strengthening his own position by responding to the wishes of the Roman Catholic Church, including the unification of the liturgy.

レオン国王(在位1065‐1109)，カスティリャ国王(在位1072‐1109)。父王からレオン王国を継承したが，兄のカスティリャ王サンチョ2世に追われて，当時イスラム王国だったトレドに亡命，兄の死後レオン，カスティリャ両国の王位についた。兄の筆頭家臣だったエル･シッドとの不和から，史料での評価は芳しくないが，現実の王は祖父以来のヨーロッパ接近策を継承促進して，国土回復戦争のための背後の守りを固め，また典礼統一をはじめとするローマ教皇庁の意向にこたえて自らの立場を強化するなど，優れた外交感覚の持主だった。
