Born: Around 1498 in Zurich Died: 1526. Maienfeld. Swiss Reformer, founder of the Anabaptist church in Switzerland and southern Germany. After receiving a primarily humanist education at the universities of Basel, Vienna, and Paris, he returned to Zurich (1520) and became an ardent supporter of H. Zwingli. In 1524, he broke with Zwingli because of his attempt to establish a free church that was not bound by the control of the city council. In 1525, he founded a church and performed the first anabaptisms in modern history. He died in 1526 during the plague epidemic. He left no writings other than 69 letters.
