A non-destructive testing method that utilizes the fact that when a magnetic material such as steel is magnetized, magnetic flux leakage occurs if there is a defect. In the widely used magnetic particle testing method, magnetic powder such as iron oxide powder is attached to the surface of the material to be tested, and the location of the flaw is identified from the pattern created by the leakage of magnetic flux. Either direct or alternating current can be used for magnetization, but the latter can only detect surface defects due to the skin effect. Another widely used method is to scan the material surface with a coil (such as a rail inspection vehicle that inspects rails while moving). There is also a method that uses a semiconductor detection element to detect the leakage of magnetic flux as an electrical signal.

非破壊検査法の一つ。鋼材など磁性体を磁化したとき，欠陥があると磁束のもれが生じることを利用したもの。広く用いられる磁粉探傷では，被検材料表面に酸化鉄粉末などの磁性体粉末を付着させ，磁束のもれでできる模様からきずの所在を知る。磁化のための電流は直流，交流とも用いられるが，後者では表皮効果のため表面の欠陥しか検出できない。また材料面をコイルで走査する方法も広く利用（走りながらレールを検査するレール探傷車など）されている。ほかに，半導体検出素子によって磁束のもれを電気信号として検出する方法もある。
