…From 1843 onwards, he was an important editor of the magazine, and contributed many articles under various pseudonyms. In 1865, he had a disagreement with fellow editor Busken Huet (1860-1920), and both of them retired. In his later years, he devoted himself to poetry and literary research. In Jan, his wife and youngest son (1842), he sharply criticized the slackness of the spirit of the times, and in Rijksmuseum (1844) and other works, he advocated the revival of national culture by taking the culture and life of the Golden Age of the 17th century as a model, sounding a warning to the spiritual life of the Dutch people of his time. …
