Queen of France. Her father was Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino of the Medici family. In 1533, she married Henry (later Henry II), the second son of King Francis I of France. As the mother of three kings (Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III) and two queens (Elisabeth, wife of Philip II, and Marguerite, wife of Henry IV), she lived through the turmoil of the French Wars of Religion with tolerance as her creed, working to establish the dignity of the king and to ensure the survival of the Valois dynasty. During Charles IX's minority, she served as regent, oppressing Protestants and condoning the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (August 24-25, 1572).

フランスの王妃。父はメディチ家のウルビノ公ロレンツォ。1533年，フランス王フランソア1世の第2子アンリ(のちのアンリ2世)と結婚。3人の国王(フランソア2世，シャルル9世，アンリ3世)と2人の王妃(フェリペ2世の王妃エリザベト，アンリ4世の王妃マルグリット)の母として，ユグノー戦争の混乱時代を，寛容を信条に，国王の尊厳の確立とバロア王家の存続のために生き抜いた。シャルル9世の未成年の時代は摂政を務め，新教徒を抑圧して，サン･バルテルミの虐殺(1572年8月24～25日)を黙認した。
