Sejo - The founder

Japanese: 世祖 - せいそ
Sejo - The founder

The seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty (reigned 1455-68). His given name was Ju. He was the second son of the fourth king, Sejong. Before ascending to the throne, he was called Suyangdaegun. In 1453, after his nephew Danjong (reigned 1452-55) ascended to the throne, he murdered Hwangbo-in and other senior officials, seized power (Kiyu-seinan), and then passed on the throne to him. He strengthened his royal authority by improving the governing system, such as reforming the government system, establishing a military system (the Owei system), enacting the law on land and revising the amount of tribute, and compiling the "Great Code of Governance." He also suppressed the rebellion of the northeastern local lord Li Shi-ai, and attacked the Jurchens outside the border, increasing his military might and bringing the kingdom to its peak.
