A passerine bird of the flycatcher family. Total length is about 22 cm. Males have striking black and white plumage similar to that of magpies. Females have dark gray areas instead of the male's black feathers. They are found in southern China, South Asia south of the Himalayas, the Greater Sunda Islands, and the Philippines. They live in urban areas, gardens, fields, shrubs, and mangrove forests, and move around the ground catching insects and other creatures to eat. They are well known for their beautiful singing voice, which they sing in a complex, melodic voice, and are often kept as caged birds in China and Southeast Asia.
