Carboxypeptidase

This enzyme is secreted from the pancreas and small intestinal mucosa and acts to cleave amino acids at the C-terminus (carboxyl terminus) of proteins and peptides. It is secreted from the pancreas as procarboxypeptidase, which is activated by trypsin or enterokinase in the duodenum to become this enzyme. There are two types: enzyme A (enzyme number 3.4.2.1), which acts on neutral and acidic amino acids, and enzyme B (enzyme number 3.4.2.2), which acts specifically on lysine and arginine. In addition, there are metalloenzymes in animals and microorganisms that act selectively on certain amino acids.
