In the Vedic period, when the causes of illness were believed to be primarily supernatural and magical, the focus of treatment was incantation, and priests also played the role of physicians. When experience and knowledge of illnesses and medicinal plants were accumulated and compiled into the system known as Āyurveda, physicians became a specialized profession independent of the priests. Already in the 6th century BCE, there were two centers of medicine.
