Bookmarks are generally thought to be tree branches broken off by villagers on mountain paths as a guidepost (signpost) on the way home. A guidepost does not necessarily have to be made by hand. Another method is to tie grass or paper to a tree branch as a landmark. A bookmark placed inside a book one is not reading is also a type of guidepost for the way home. However, this is a guidepost for when the reader is returning to the book they were not reading. There are also guideposts in the form of "bookmark for...". In this case, the meaning of the way home disappears, and only the meaning of a guidepost remains. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
