Japanese: 栞∥枝折 - しおり

Bookmarks are generally thought to be tree branches broken off by villagers on mountain paths as a guidepost (signpost) on the way home. A guidepost does not necessarily have to be made by hand. Another method is to tie grass or paper to a tree branch as a landmark. A bookmark placed inside a book one is not reading is also a type of guidepost for the way home. However, this is a guidepost for when the reader is returning to the book they were not reading. There are also guideposts in the form of "bookmark for...". In this case, the meaning of the way home disappears, and only the meaning of a guidepost remains.

栞は一般的には村人が山道などで，帰路の道しるべ(道標)として木の枝を折りかけたものとされている。道しるべということであれば，必ずしも枝を手折る必要はない。草や紙などを目じるしとなる木の枝に結んでおく方法もある。　読みさしの本に挟んでおく栞もまた帰路の道しるべの一種である。ただしそれは，読者が読みさしの本に帰るときの道しるべである。また〈……の栞〉という形の道しるべもある。ここでは帰路という意味は消えて，道しるべの意味だけが残っている。
