Born: April 8, 1911, Lasinari, Romania [Died] June 20, 1995. Paris. French critic. Studied philosophy at the University of Bucharest, studied abroad in Paris in 1937, and settled in France thereafter. A moralist who confronted nothingness amid the "inconvenience of being born" and sought an "absolute without God," he wrote works such as Précis de décomposition (1949) and Syllogismes de l'amertume (52) in a sharp, proverbial style that thoroughly criticized existing systems of thought and belief, that is, all "illusions" constructed by humans. Other works include Histoire et utopie (60) and Ecartèlement (79). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
