The aesthetic concept of Basho's haiku. A type of beauty related to "sabi." Basho and his disciples wrote it as "shihori." A verse that embodies "sadness" as a "figure" without using emotional words such as "sadness," and in which one can sense "sadness" as an aftertaste, can be said to have "shihori." This can also be seen from Kyorai's comment on Kyoroku's poem "Omeiko ya yonaka no bukkake ni nun" ("The new nun with a green head and a lecture on life"), "If the seven middle characters were changed, it would be a poem that could also express pathos. (Omitted) I do not mean to ask that the words and meaning of the poem be made compassionate. I said that I wanted to express the depth of that poem." (Letter to Kyoroku dated January 29, 1685) Basho is said to have commented on Kyoroku's poem "Ten rice dumplings turn into tiny grains in the autumn wind" by saying, "There is depth to this poem" (Kyoroku Sho).
