Shuri

Japanese:
Shuri

A district in the eastern part of Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, Okinawa Island. Formerly Shuri City. It was incorporated as a city in 1921 (Taisho 10), but was incorporated into Naha City in 1954 (Showa 29). Its name is Shui. It is located on the Ryukyu limestone plateau, and is bordered to the south by the Asato River. It was a former castle town, and during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, Shuri Castle was at the highest point, surrounded by temples and samurai residences. A train line was opened from Naha in 1914, but was discontinued in 1933 (Showa 8). It was a fierce battlefield during the Battle of Okinawa, and a military headquarters was set up underground beneath the castle ruins. After World War II, the University of the Ryukyus was established on the site of Shuri Castle, but was relocated to Nishihara Town and Nakagusuku Village between 1977 and 1984. Major historical sites include Shureimon Gate, Sonohyan Utaki, the ruins of Engakuji Temple, Tamaudun, and the stone-paved road in Kinjo-cho. In 1992, the Shuri area (Shuri Castle Park), centered on the restored Shuri Castle Seiden, was opened as the National Okinawa Memorial Park together with the Okinawa Ocean Expo Commemorative Park (Motobu-cho). In 2000, the ruins of Shuri Castle and the stone gate of Sonohyan Utaki were registered as a World Heritage Site as "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu".
