Sikkim Treaty

Japanese: シッキム条約 - シッキムじょうやく

A treaty concluded between the Qing dynasty and Great Britain in 1890 (the 16th year of the Guangxu era). In 1887, Tibetan troops invaded Sikkim, and Britain intervened and occupied the country. To resolve this issue, the Qing dynasty, which was the suzerain of Tibet, and Great Britain concluded the Sikkim Treaty, in which the Qing recognized Britain's protectorate over Sikkim and also established the border between Tibet and Sikkim. This treaty solidified Britain's position in the southern Himalayas and also opened the way for further advance into Tibet.

1890年(光緒16)清朝とイギリスとのあいだに結ばれた条約。1887年，チベット軍がシッキムへ侵入，これに対しイギリスが介入しシッキムを占領した。この問題処理のため，チベットの宗主であった清朝とイギリスのあいだで締結されたのがシッキム条約で，清はシッキムへのイギリスの保護権を承認し，チベット･シッキム間の国境等も定めた。この条約で，ヒマラヤ南域におけるイギリスの地位は決定的なものとなり，さらにチベット進出への道も開かれた。
