Arshile Gorky

American painter. His real name is Vasdanig Manog Adoian. He was born in Holcombe, Armenia. In 1920, he fled the Turkish invasion and emigrated to the United States. He studied at the New School of Design in Boston and the Grand Central School of Art in New York, where he later taught. He was influenced by Uccello, Ingres, Picasso, Miro, Kandinsky, and Roberto Matta, and changed his style many times, but at the end of the 1930s he found his own direction. He achieved paintings that expressed and arranged biomorphic images that overlapped the great American nature with memories of Armenia through skillful line drawing, and won the praise of Breton. From the mid-1940s, his paintings became more free, making full use of automatic methods, but in 1947 he was involved in a car accident that made it difficult for him to continue painting, and the following year he hanged himself in Sherman, Connecticut.

アメリカの画家。本名はVasdanig Manog Adoian。アルメニアのホルコムに生まれる。1920年、トルコの侵略を脱してアメリカに移住。ボストンのニュー・スクール・オブ・デザイン、のちに教鞭(きょうべん)をとるニューヨークのグランド・セントラル美術学校などに学んだ。ウッチェロ、アングル、ピカソ、ミロ、カンディンスキー、ロベルト・マッタらの影響を受け、作風を転々と変えていったが、30年代の終わりになって自己の方向をみいだす。アメリカの大自然とアルメニアの記憶とを重ね合わせたバイオモーフィック（生形態学的）なイメージを、巧みな線描力によって表し布置する絵画に到達し、ブルトンの称賛を得た。40年代の中ごろから画面はオートマティックな方法を駆使していっそう自由なものになるが、47年、自動車事故にあい制作が困難となり、翌年コネティカット州シャーマンで縊死(いし)した。
