Poet and English literature scholar. Born on February 22, 1890, in Iida-cho, Shimoina-gun, Nagano Prefecture. His real name was Higuchi Kunito (Kunito was his favorite font, and his family register read Kunito). He had over twenty pen names, including Kakomin, Daomin, and Chosetsuro-shujin. He graduated from the English department of Waseda University. In December 1917 (Taisho 6), he published his first collection of poems, "Ode to Transformation," which was based on the "beauty of the intertwining of form and tone" of hieroglyphics. He then released his second collection, "The Black-robed Virgin Mary," in June 1921, calling his own style of poetry "Gothic-Roman style." "Moonlight falls on the earth, and within the universe, the liquid mercury is dissolved. Ah, the path I travel is black and black" ("The Taoist's Moonlit Journey" I). This "Gothic Roman style" was perfected in "Sacred Prose" (1933) as an alchemical lyric poem. He began teaching at the School of Literature at Waseda University in 1922, and achieved outstanding results in the field of critical research, including translations of works such as "English Mystical Poetry" (1922) and "Salome" (1938), as well as the two-volume magnum opus "History of Meiji and Taisho Poetry" (1929) and his doctoral dissertation "The Priestess of Beauty" (1939). He was a professor at Waseda University and Aoyama Gakuin University. In 1952 (Showa 27), he was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize for his works "History of Meiji Romantic Literature" (1951) and "Complete Poems of Hinatsu Konosuke" (1952). He passed away on June 13, 1971.
