A city in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1939. Facing Kasado Bay and run through the Sanyo Main Line, the city center developed as a salt production area during the feudal era, and became an industrial city after World War I. It is one of the centers of the Shunan industrial region, with heavy industries such as rolling stock, oil, shipbuilding, and thermal power generation as its mainstay. In recent years, the development of housing complexes, commercial complexes, and logistics and manufacturing bases has progressed. The Iwatoku Line runs inland. The city is connected to Kasado Island, which is part of the Setonaikai National Park, by the Kasado Bridge. 89.35 km2 . Population 55,012 (2010). 山口県南東部の市。1939年市制。笠戸湾に面し山陽本線が通じる中心市街は藩政時代製塩地として発達,第1次大戦を機に工業都市となった。車両,石油,造船,火力発電などの重工業を主とし周南工業地域の一中心をなす。近年は住宅団地の造成や商業集積施設の建設,物流・製造拠点の造成が進められている。内陸に岩徳線が通じる。瀬戸内海国立公園に含まれる笠戸島とは笠戸大橋で結ばれる。89.35km2。5万5012人(2010)。
