...The distinctive feature of French planning was that it was not merely a system of economic forecasting, as in many capitalist countries, but was an active plan. This expansion of the public sector, with nationalization and planning as the main policy tools, made postwar France a typical mixed economy, and further strengthened the tradition of dirigisme (state leadership), in which bureaucrats exercised complete control over the political economy.
