A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family (APG classification: Cyperaceae). It grows to 0.5-1 meter tall and has leaves about 1 cm wide. It flowers in May-June, and the stigma of the female flower falls off after flowering. The sacs are dark green-brown and curl when ripe. It grows in marshes such as ponds and riverbanks, and grows in colonies on long rhizomes. The leaves that grow in summer are harvested and widely used to make umbrellas, raincoats, and ropes, and are therefore called kasage or minosuge. It is found throughout Japan, and is distributed in the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, Korea, and China. A variant of kinki kasage, whose stigma does not fall off after flowering, is distributed in the Kinki and Chugoku regions. [Eiichiro Kinoshita July 19, 2019] It grows in wetlands such as ponds and riverbanks, and grows in colonies with long rhizomes. The long leaves are used to weave hats and raincoats.
