In 1880, with the opening of the railroad, a new town was built to the east of the old town, and this development included the old town. It is home to the University of New Mexico and the University of Albuquerque. Tourist attractions include the San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1706, Old Town Plaza, numerous museums, and a cave with the oldest dwelling in the Western Hemisphere.
