The name of the region in northeastern Poland that includes the Masurian Lake Region. In its current administrative division, it spans the three provinces of Olsztyn, Suwałki, and Ciechanów. This region was once part of East Prussia, and was influenced by German culture since ancient times due to the advance of the Teutonic Knights. Geographically, the area lies east of the right bank of the middle Vistula River, west of the Neman River, and north of the Narew River, a tributary of the Vistula River, and is home to countless glacial lakes of various sizes (the Masurian Lake Region) amid hills formed by glacial deposits. There are said to be 2,700 lakes in total, including Poland's largest Lake Sniardowy (113.8 km2), Lake Mamry, and Lake Niegocin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
