In the Muromachi period, this group of salt retailers, headquartered at Daijo-in Temple of Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara, sold salt purchased from the Shogan-in salt wholesaler affiliated with the temple in Nara. During the Bunmei era (1469-87), they lived in various locations around Gangoji temple, including Gochuin, Ki-dera, Wakido, Jodo, Inoue, Takahata, Tansaka, Ronotsuji, Ikenohata, Imakubo, Kasumi, and Fukuin, but acted as one group. They received salt from the main wholesaler, put it in a winnowing basket, carried it around, and sold it on the road, which is why they were called Shitami or Shimominoza. Thus, initially their activities were limited to selling salt on the street, but around 1466 (Bunsho 1), they were sued by the main za for selling salt indoors.
