Osamu Hiraide

Osamu Hiraide

Poet, novelist, and critic. Born into the Kodama family in Ishiyama Village, Nakakanbara County, Echigo Province (now Niigata City). His pen names were Tsuyuka and Kokudoshi. After graduating from Kameda Elementary School, he worked as an elementary school teacher for about six years. He loved literature, and published tanka, haiku, and critiques, became a member of the Tokyo Shinshisha Society, and contributed works to the magazine Myojo. He married the Hiraide family of Takada City (now Joetsu City), moved to Tokyo in 1901 (Meiji 34), and enrolled in Meiji Law School (now Meiji University), and registered as a lawyer after graduating. He is famous for defending those involved in the High Treason Incident of 1910. His short story "Rebel" (Taiyo, September 1913) was banned as soon as it was published.

歌人、小説家、評論家。越後(えちご)国中蒲原(なかかんばら)郡石山村(現新潟市)の児玉家に生まれた。別号露花、黒瞳子(こくどうし)。亀田高等小学校を卒業後、約6年間小学校の教員をした。文芸を好み、短歌、俳句、評論を発表、東京新詩社の同人となり、『明星』誌上に作品を寄せた。高田市(現上越市)の平出家に入籍、1901年(明治34)上京、明治法律学校(現明治大学)入学、卒業後弁護士登録。1910年の大逆事件の弁護をしたことは有名。短編小説『逆徒』(『太陽』1913.9)は発表と同時に発禁となった。
