[Died] February 9, 2001. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. American business scholar. Graduated from the University of Chicago's Department of Political Science in 1936, and majored in political science at the graduate school. After serving as an assistant professor and professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1942, he became a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in 1949. He has held important positions such as vice president of the American Association of Management Science and chairman of the Behavioral Science Section of the National Research Council. A leading researcher in behavioral science-based organizational theory, he attempted unique analyses in new fields such as computer use and decision-making. The main theories of organization he worked on included (1) theories on the decision-making process of individuals in organizations, (2) theories of human behavior in organizations, and (3) theories of organizational equilibrium. In 1978, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his "pioneering research into the decision-making process within economic organizations." His major works include Administrative Behavior (1945), Models of Man (57), "Organizations" (58, co-authored with J.G. March), The New Science of Management Decision (60), and The Sciences of the Artificial (68).

He studied at New York University and the University of Denver, and after working as a television scriptwriter, he made his way to Broadway. He gained popularity for his comedies, which were mainly set in New York and depicted everyday life with clever plots, well-characterized characters, and witty, humorous dialogue. His representative works include The Odd Couple (1965), The Sunshine Boys (1972), and the autobiographical Brighton Beach Memoirs (1983). He also wrote screenplays for musicals and films.

[Died] July 23, 1904. London. British physician. Known as the greatest authority on hygiene in the 19th century. He was the first public health surgeon for the City of London (1848-55), and built a sewerage system that was also used by other counties and cities. From 1855 to 1876, he was the first medical officer for the central government, and led the country's hygiene administration. He also established a national research institute, published authoritative reports, established a vaccination system, and created many health laws, including the National Health Act of 1866, which was the first national health law to be scientifically and compulsorily implemented for the entire nation. In 1887, he was raised to the peerage and awarded the Order of the Bath, KCB.

[Died] June 3, 2000, Santa Barbara, California. American politician. Graduated from Lafayette College. After serving as an executive officer at Weeden and Salomon, he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury from 1974 to 1977. In 1974, he also served as chairman of the Petroleum Policy Committee.

アメリカ合衆国の劇作家。フルネーム Marvin Neil Simon。ニューヨーク大学とデンバー大学に学び,テレビの脚本家を経て,ブロードウェーに進出。主としてニューヨークを舞台に,巧みなプロット,性格づけのしっかりした登場人物,当意即妙の滑稽な台詞を用いて日常生活を描く喜劇で人気を得た。代表作は『おかしなカップル』The Odd Couple(1965),『サンシャイン・ボーイズ』The Sunshine Boys(1972),自伝的色彩の濃い『思い出のブライトン・ビーチ』Brighton Beach Memoirs(1983)など。ほかにミュージカルや映画のシナリオも手がけた。

イギリスの医師。 19世紀における衛生学の最高権威といわれる。ロンドン市最初の公衆衛生医官 (1848~55) で,下水道をつくり,各郡市もまたその指導を受けた。 1855~76年,中央政府の最初の医官となり,国の衛生行政を指導した。さらに国立研究所をつくり,権威ある報告書を公刊し,予防接種制度を確立,多くの保健法をつくった。そのなかに 66年の国民衛生法があるが,これは全国民的に,科学的,強制的に実施された最初の国民保健法である。 87年貴族に列せられ,バス勲章 K. C. B.を授けられた。
