Plasmasphere - Plasma ken (English spelling)

A doughnut-shaped region surrounding the Earth filled with plasma with particle energy of less than a few eV generated in the ionosphere. The plasmasphere is surrounded by magnetic field lines emanating from the Earth's surface at a geomagnetic latitude of about 60°, and the plasma density is about 10 ² to 10 ³ particles/cc at the equatorial plane. Outside of this, the plasma density drops rapidly to about 1 to 10 particles/cc. The boundary between these two regions is called the plasmapause. The plasmasphere is formed when ionospheric plasma diffuses upward along the Earth's magnetic field lines and accumulates. It is merely an extension of the ionosphere, but the ionosphere is usually referred to up to an altitude of about 1,000 km, and the region higher than this is often referred to as the plasmasphere.
