A Kurdish rebellion during the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. In February 1925, the Kurds rebelled against President Kemal Atatürk's policy of separation of religion and state. The rebellion was led by Şeyh Sait (1865-1925), head of the Naqshbandi sect, and quickly spread to southeastern Anatolia. The Turkish government immediately sent in troops to put it down. The 46 ringleaders of the rebellion were arrested and sentenced to death by the Independent Court on June 19, and were executed the following day in Diyarbakir.
