Anthology of strange poems by Sanboku

A self-selected collection of poems by the late Heian poet Minamoto Toshiyori. Ten volumes. Published in his later years, around 1128 (Taiji 3). It is a neatly organized complete collection of poems, with 1622 poems (including three important ones) categorized as an imperial anthology. The title "Sanki" means useless wood, and contains self-mockery for the fact that he was an authority on the art of waka poetry but ended up in misfortune. As a poet who was well versed in the classics since the "Man'yoshu," and who was not afraid of the vulgar, but instead sought to expand the realm of poetry by introducing new forms of expression, he uses many difficult and vulgar words to develop his own unique style. His style is diverse, ranging from lavish contemplation of nature to fresh, landscape-based poems.

平安後期の歌人源俊頼(としより)の自撰(じせん)家集。10巻。晩年の1128年（大治3）ころの成立。1622首（うち重出歌3首）を勅撰集仕立てに部類した整然たる全歌集の形態をとっている。書名の「散木」は役にたたぬ木材の意で、歌道の権威でありながら不遇に終わったことへの自嘲(じちょう)が込められる。『万葉集』以来の古典に精通し、卑俗を恐れず表現の新奇、歌境の拡充を図った歌人だけに、難解な綺語(きご)、俗語を多用して、独自の新風を展開している。豪奢(ごうしゃ)な自然観照、清新な叙景歌など、歌風は多彩にわたる。
