American novelist and playwright. Born in New Orleans on September 30th, he did not receive any notable formal education. He worked as a proofreader, tap dancer, and general errand boy for The New Yorker magazine before publishing the short stories The Tree of Night and Miriam. He is known for his work The Distant Voice, the Distant Room (1948), which depicts the psychological development of a boy with abnormal sexual tendencies and sensitivity. This is an anti-realist work, just like the collection of short stories The Tree of Night and Other Stories (1949), and depicts the "dark world" of human psychology. After the lyrical The Grass Harp (1951, adapted and performed by the author the following year), Hear the Voice of the Muse (1956), and Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), he made a complete turn in his realistic writing style with In Cold Blood (1966), which advocated a "non-fiction novel," which caused a stir. "Christmas Memories" (1966) and "Thanksgiving Guests" (1968) are lyrical memoirs. He started out as "The Terrible Child," and his style has taken on a variety of tones, but a consistent theme from his early days was the futility of life, human loneliness, and the desire for a paradise that heals the soul. He passed away on August 25, 1984. In 2005 (Heisei 17), a new translation of his masterpiece, "In Cold Blood," was published in Japan, causing a stir.
