Artemidorus (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek scholar. In addition to various works on divination (scattered) around the end of the 2nd century, he wrote the five volumes of the extant "The Interpretation of Dreams." This is a rational interpretation of the contents of dreams based on materials collected during extensive travels, and includes many examples of dreams coming true. He removed superstition and mystical interpretations as much as possible from dream interpretation, and further distinguished between general and personal elements of dreams by including personal habits and thoughts in the subject of his consideration. The influence of Stoic philosophy is evident.

生没年不詳。古代ギリシアの学者。2世紀末ごろ各種の占いに関する著作（散逸）のほか、現存の『夢占い』5巻を著した。これは、広く旅行して集めた資料に基づき夢の内容を合理的に解釈したもので、夢が現実となった多数の実例があげられている。彼は、夢占いからできる限り迷信や神秘的解釈を取り除き、さらに個人の習慣や考えを考察の対象に加えることにより、夢の一般的要素と個人的要素とを区別した。ストア哲学の影響が顕著である。
