His father, Julius Caesar Scaliger (1484-1558), was born in Italy and spent the first half of his life as a mercenary throughout Italy. In 1526, he settled in Agen in southern France and became a physician. In 1531, he published a pamphlet on Latin stylistics that criticized Erasmus and advocated a complete imitation of Cicero, which earned him a reputation as a writer. In his De Poesie (1561), he attempted to establish a literary history and theory based on consistent principles, covering all Greek and Latin verse works. …
