Abe Sadato - Abe Sadato

Japanese:
Abe Sadato - Abe Sadato
[Born] Kannin 3 (1019)
[Died] September 17, 1062. Mutsu, Kuraigawa. A military commander in the mid-Heian period. Son of Yoritoki. Commonly known as Kuraigawa Jiro. In 1051, together with his father, he rebelled against the Imperial Court, defeated the army of Mutsu no Kami Fujiwara Nobutoshi, and submitted to Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, who then took up the post. However, in 1056, Sadato was suspected of attacking the son of the provincial governor at night, and the battle between Yoriyoshi and the Abe clan resumed (→ Zenkunen no Eki). The Abe clan collectively ruled the clan, and Yoritoki's sons divided and ruled the six inner counties, while Sadato was based at Kuraigawa no Ki in Iwate County. In 1057, his father Yoritoki was killed in battle, but the Abe clan, firmly united under Sadato, defeated Yoriyoshi's army at Kawasaki no Ki. For several years afterwards, he also extended his influence in Uchiguni south of Kinugawa River, but in 1562, when Yoriyoshi succeeded in forming an alliance with the brothers Kiyohara Mitsuyori and Takenori, who were prisoners of war in Dewa, Sadato lost the Kinugawa and Chokai forts to the allied forces, and was finally defeated and killed at his base, the Kuriyagawa fort, with his head on display at the West Prison Gate in Kyoto. He was said to have had a striking appearance, with a height of over 6 feet (180 cm) and a waist circumference of 7 feet 4 inches (222 cm). In the Battle of Kinugawa River, when Minamoto no Yoshiie began to sing, "The hem of my robe has come undone," Sadato immediately replied, "The pain of my old age and the messy threads," and Yoshiie was so touched that he removed his arrows and withdrew. This is a famous legend.
