The capital of Puerto Rico, a free associated state of the United States, located in the central West Indies, and the political, economic, and cultural center of the island. Population: 438,078 (1995). Founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1521. Because Puerto Rico was located at a strategic military point in the Caribbean, the Spanish government worked hard to fortify San Juan, and a fortress called El Morro, built at the end of the 16th century, still remains today. The city is divided into the old town, centered around the colonial government building and church, and the newly developed area, where modern buildings stand.
