A village in Abuta County, Iburi Subprefecture, southwest Hokkaido. Population 2,269 (1995). Located on the north shore of Lake Toya, it is made up of the caldera walls of Lake Toya and a plateau that connects to the foot of Mt. Yotei, with the Nutsukibetsu River flowing west along its northern edge. The name comes from the Ainu word "Toya," meaning a fertile hill facing the lake. It began in 1887 when 22 households from Kagawa Prefecture settled here. Most of the cultivated land is farmland, producing sugar beets, beans, potatoes, as well as asparagus. 北海道南西部,胆振(いぶり)支庁虻田(あぶた)郡の村。人口2269(1995)。洞爺湖の北岸に位置し,洞爺湖カルデラ壁と羊蹄(ようてい)山麓に連なる台地からなり,北縁を貫気別(ぬつきべつ)川が西流する。地名は湖に面する肥沃な丘という意味のアイヌ語〈トヤ〉に由来する。1887年香川県から22戸が団体入植したのに始まる。耕地の大半は畑地で,テンサイ,豆類,ジャガイモのほか,アスパラガスなどを産する。観湖台,大観望からの洞爺湖の眺めがよい。
