Democratic Party - Minseito

Japanese: 民政党 - みんせいとう

A major political party in the early Showa period, alongside the Rikken Seiyukai Party. Its official name was the Rikken Minseito Party. It was formed in 1927 by the merger of the Kenseikai Party and the Seiyukai Honto Party. Compared to the Seiyukai's landlord-oriented character, it was said to have an urban bourgeois character. In the first general election in 1928, it was closely matched by the Seiyukai Party, and in 1929, its president, Hamaguchi Yuko, formed a cabinet, pushed through the lifting of the gold embargo, and signed the London Naval Treaty. Later, Wakatsuki Reijiro formed a cabinet. Pushed back by the rising military and nationalism, the party was dissolved in 1940 and absorbed into the New Order Movement.

立憲政友会と並ぶ昭和初期の大政党。正称は立憲民政党。憲政会と政友本党が1927年合同して結成。政友会の地主的性格に比べ，都市ブルジョア的といわれた。1928年の普選第１回選挙で政友会に伯仲，1929年総裁浜口雄幸が組閣，金解禁を断行，ロンドン軍縮条約を調印。のち若槻礼次郎が組閣。台頭する軍部と国家主義に押され，1940年解党して新体制運動に吸収された。
