[Command and Civilian Control]
Under the United States Constitution, the President is the Commander in Chief of the armed forces and the person in charge of the defense of the United States. More specifically, assisted by the Secretary of Defense, a civilian, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is made up of military experts, the President commands and directs the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, the National Guard, which is the national organization of state guards, and the Coast Guard. In addition, the National Security Council has been established as an advisory body to the President to ensure the integrity of national defense, diplomacy, and the economy, given that modern warfare is a total war.
