A Czech female writer. Initially, she wrote works that depicted the psychology and emotions of women, but gradually she began to deal with social issues. Her most famous work is the proletarian novel Siren (1935), which depicts the lives of three generations of coal miners, and she is well known both in Czech and overseas. Her other works include the sequel, The Miner's Ballad (1938), as well as the full-length novel The Most Beautiful World (1923), and her children's literature masterpieces include the novella Bruno (1930) and the full-length novel The Little Robinson (1940). チェコの女性作家。初めは女性の心理や感情を描いた作品を書いていたが,しだいに社会問題を扱うようになった。三代にわたる炭鉱夫の生活を描いたプロレタリア小説《サイレン》(1935年)が代表作とされ,国外でもよく知られている。その続編ともいうべき《坑夫のバラード》(1938年)のほか,長編《この上なく美しい世界》(1923年)などがあり,児童文学にも中編《ブルーノ》(1930年)や長編《少女ロビンソン》(1940年)などの傑作がある。
